Pat testing or Portable Appliance Testing is an important part of any health & safety policy. The Electricity at Work Regulations expect you to take reasonable care of your electrical equipment ( approx. 25% of all reportable electrical accidents involve portable appliances ).
If someone were to receive a shock from a piece of your electrical equipment then you may be expected to prove that you took reasonable steps to ensure their safety.
By implementing a planned maintenance schedule, (PAT Testing) you would be showing that you have taken reasonable care of your electrical equipment.
The Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) places an obligation in the following circumstances:
The level of inspection and testing required is dependant upon the risk of the appliance becoming faulty, which is in turn dependant upon the type of appliance, the nature of its use and the environment in which it is used.
